Dwight J. Roy certainly comes from humble beginnings. A southern Creole black boy born on the outskirts of Lafayette in a town called New Iberia, his childhood was a typical Louisiana fairytale: French-speaking grandparents drinking iced tea on the front porch, Zydeco and R&B on the radio, “cold cups” with his cousins on sweltering hot Louisiana summer days, picking blackberries for Mawmaw Audrey and her recipes, Steen's cane syrup and biscuits from Mawmaw Regina, Sunday dinners after church, ancient herbal remedies for cuts and scrapes and wasp stings.

Fast-forward to today, and life is a bit different. Working full-time as a service agent for a car rental company at the Lafayette airport, Roy gets down and dirty scrubbing cars and refilling tires most days, while attempting to capture the magic of his home and experience through song, art, and performance when his free time allows him.

After helming his blues rock trio Electric Seed for two years, Roy decided to explore a more introspective approach to storytelling and songwriting, using the soul and R&B music of yesteryear as his first building blocks. Seamlessly weaving together blues, soul, R&B, folk, and pop, he creates tapestries that beat with a southern Creole heart. Putting together what many have deemed a “Lafayette Supergroup,” his new band is comprised of Blake Pujol (guitar), Cesar Bacaro (percussion), Edward Paul Coussan (bass), Gino Vallecillo (drums), and Mikey Chouest (keys). Given a prime time slot on the Friday evening of Lafayette’s 2017 Festival International, Roy, who started out as a bedroom guitarist in his college apartment, has certainly evolved into a unique musician and a competent bandleader.

Dwight J. Roy has said that he will continue to pursue art and music in order to preserve and contribute to his culture, a culture he is extremely proud of. Black. Southern. Creole. Louisianian. He hopes that when you listen to his music, all of these words will come to mind. He hopes that you’ll hear and identify that southern Creole heart beating throughout his music. He hopes to take you back with him to that Louisiana
fairytale. And he hopes to take you forward with him too.
